Fusion Youth Radio

Fusion Youth Radio (FYR) features young people making their voices a part of history through creative, youth-produced media. FYR is rooted in the idea that all of us deserve opportunities to tell our stories in our own words. We believe that young people must work together to take on active roles in shaping the futures of our communities. Our name honors the legacy of the Fusion politics movement of North Carolina in the 1890s, a bi-racial coalition that gained power across the state before coming to a violent end at the hands of white supremacists in 1898. We seek to bring together youth with many backgrounds to create the sort of community that not even the “Fusionists” imagined.

Summer Audio Workshops
FYR began in June 2011 as a summer audio production workshop. Through our summer audio workshops, FYR youth producers learn techniques for documentary-style radio production. They are charged with cultivating their curiosity and bringing the concerns of their communities to the airwaves. Our youth producers created four short audio stories in our first-ever summer workshop, one of which was selected for the Generation PRX Best Youth-Made Radio of 2011 list.

FYR LIVE
Building on the initiative and inspiration of our first group of talented youth producers, FYR LIVE was born in October 2011. The bi-weekly show, produced in collaboration with Sacrificial Poets and WXYC, airs every other Sunday at 5 pm on WXYC-Chapel Hill 89.3FM. FYR LIVE features youth spoken word artists, music, audio documentaries, and discussion around questions of social justice and concepts of community. The program creates bridges across traditional gaps between the university and the town by bringing high school students to the UNC campus and serves as a forum for discussing upcoming events and emerging issues. FYR is produced for youth by youth.
